Do you ever wonder why God does not reveal His wrath to humans, wiping out the evils which threaten the very existence of His creation? With all of the turmoil seen in today’s world, I sometimes think I have somehow stepped into a realm worse than Sodom and Gomorrah. My spontaneous reaction is to beg God for His intervention to right this runaway train which is heading towards the destruction of all moral culture. It appears the end times must be near as we anxiously await answers to our prayers of intercession.
Our Current Time
The passion with which many defend late-term abortion – all the way to infanticide – is only one scourge on this nation and world. This cancer of immorality has spread at a viral rate. The hapless youth of today drink it in as if it were the nectar of the gods. They embrace gender confusion, sexual deviance, and unchaste relationships with an exuberance that can only come from the demonic.
Many parents, poorly catechized themselves, bask in an unrealistic lack of awareness. We hear talk of their goal of simply being “a good person“ and mourn the many souls falling away from the nourishment of grace and Eucharist. The ultimate goal of many, it seems, is being happy. Yet the pursuit of happiness is of a worldly nature – a material pursuit that always fails. The truly laudable goal is joy in the Lord!
God is Not Asleep
Do not be duped! God is not asleep at the wheel. Although it sometimes appears that He is slow to act, on the behalf of the righteous and His own law, His time is not our time. He is timeless and has no need for rushing things along. We must keep this in mind. In His mercy, He waits for our poor souls to catch up with the Divine Will. He is slow to anger, overflowing with Mercy, and wishes to save every soul. Even as the psalms beseech Him.
“Rise up, O God, and defend your cause; remember how fools mock you all day long.“ Psalm 74:22
Whispers of the Holy Spirit
It is comforting, yet humbling to recognize the helping hand of the Holy Spirit. He wisely places exactly the right scriptural passage right in from of our eyes, at precisely the right time. That was my experience recently. The trials and tribulations of society, and even Holy Mother Church weigh heavily on my impatient heart.
Yet Psalm 74:22 (above) appeared as the entry in my daily reflections on the Psalms for May 2. In reading the passage and meditating on its meaning, a bright ray of hope appeared in my heart. Spiritual joy helped me to realize that I am not alone and that countless others, living before me, also entreated God for solace.
It is best not underestimate the timeless nature of sacred scripture. Our eyes, previously covered by scales of worldly blindness, open exactly when God deems it to be the best time – for each individual soul. Yet seeking sight requires our cooperation with Him. After all, He desires our freely given attention and love. In this vein, He offers answers, solutions, on a daily basis. However, we must empty ourselves of worldly longing in order to be open to His precious gifts. The whispers of the Holy Spirit are present. It is ours to have eyes that see and ears that hear.
While we wonder why God remains hidden when it comes to the trials of these times, it is vital to understand that we are incapable of seeing the big picture. Our human limitations are simply too primitive. The time for answers and solutions belongs to God alone. We are tasked with making ourselves, and those we love, ready when He calls. As a benevolent and loving God, His wish is to save the lost. Perhaps His timing means that He is offering some poor sinners more opportunities for repentance. Ending a life, before it has a chance to reconcile with Him, condemns that soul to eternal damnation.
If one of us or loved one is in a state of blindness or deaf to His call, should we not wish the gift of time? Time enough to acknowledge our lack of obedience? I, for one, am more than happy to leave the timing for God. In my sinfulness, I struggle daily. Yet, with the help of His grace, I pursue Him – beginning each day with a fresh determination to try again. I praise and glorify a God would give me myriad opportunities before calling me before His judgment seat.
In considering our sinfulness and God’s mercy it is also wise to understand the painstakingly intricate correlation between all of His human creatures. Each individual has a role to play in cooperation with creation. Even the wicked serve their purpose in calling attention to the contrast between darkness and light.
Many a great saint began his life journey as a loathsome sinner. God’s mercy, through His timing, has assisted in their willing conversion. May His mercy do the same for us. In keeping with this gift of time, it is necessary that our focus is on salvation. As the Body of Christ, this enables us to assist one another on the journey to eternal joy. By listening to the whisperings of the Holy Spirit and the gift of time, may we all succeed in our pursuit for holiness. In His time.
