Catholics who take discipleship seriously may be interested in a new, free, four-week online course being offered by Sacred Heart Major Seminary. The course is open to anyone regardless of geographic location.
The course runs for four weeks. It starts on December 1 and concludes on December 28. It is a self-paced course that looks at discipleship “through the lens of adventure stories” such as Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia.
According to Dr. Daniel Keating, Professor of Theology at Sacred Heart Major Seminary, being a Disciple of Jesus Christ is truly an adventure. And this is the title of the course – The Adventure of Discipleship. Keating teaches the course and it is based on his new book by the same name.
During each week, for four weeks, two short videos will be presented. A reading assignment from the book follows the videos. Purchasing the book is not, however, a course requirement. There will also be a short, ungraded quiz each week. The quiz serves as a self-test. A Discussion Board is also part of the course. This discussion board enables an exchange of thoughts and ideas between students.
At the conclusion of each weekly ‘module’, a list of source links and other related resources will also be available. These links and materials are for students who may want to explore some of the material presented more deeply.
A brief outline of the course is as follows:
- Discipleship as Adventure (Week 1).
- Discipleship More than a Game/Jesus More than a Superhero (Week 2).
- Providence and Trials in the Costly Adventure of Discipleship (Week 3).
- Companions for the Adventure of Discipleship (Week 4).
Dr. Keating holds has a B.A. in History from the University of Michigan (1980), and an M.A. in Theology from Sacred Heart Major Seminary (1994). He also has an M.St. in Christian Doctrine from Oxford University (1998) and a Ph.D. in Theology from Oxford University (2000).
Keating has been a Professor of Theology, teaching on Scripture, Theology, the Church Fathers, Evangelization, and Ecumenism at SHMS from 2000-present.
According to his bio, Dr. Keating has been involved in student ministry for over thirty years. He regularly lectures to students in the United States and Europe.
