Holy Angels

Want a strong faith life? You need a strong prayer life. How does one cultivate that, though? Some find it easy, and others don’t know where to begin. I’d place most in the former. It’s not that we do not want a strong, consistent prayer life, but when left to our own devices, we are like a squirrel chasing a nut. Easily distracted and feeling lost. Thankfully there are several prayer books available that can add some structure to our prayer time. Pauline Books and Media has recently released a new addition to their popular Catholic Treasury series entitled Holy Angels Prayer Book.

This pocket-sized book is similar to others in the series. It features a leatherette cover with gold-edged pages and a ribbon making it ideal for regular use as an aid in prayer. The book was written and compiled by Sr. Mary Mark Wickenhiser, FSP. This volume comes in at 143 pages and is packed with standard daily prayers as well as angel specific ones.

The book opens with an exceptional catechesis on angels. What are angels? What are their roles? How do they impact us, and why should we have a devotion to them? All fundamental questions answered before diving into the prayers in the book.

Included in the book is The Rosary of the Angels. This rosary “is an invitation to pray with our Blessed Mother and contemplate the presence of angels in the life of Jesus and Mary.” This rosary also provides an opportunity for each of us to contemplate how we might bring the angels into our own lives as well. Each of the five mysteries includes a meditation. The mysteries of this rosary are:

  • The Annunciation
  • The Birth of Jesus
  • The Flight into Egypt
  • The Agony in the Garden
  • The Resurrection

A large portion of the book is dedicated to four significant angels. Saint Michael the Archangel, Saint Gabriel the Archangel, Saint Raphael the Archangel, and our Guardian Archangel. Each of these is given an entire section of the book that includes prayers, litanies, novenas, and chaplets.

Simply put, the angels have done much for man throughout history. After all, each of us is assigned our very own. Devotion to the angels is a wonderful thing to incorporate into one’s prayer life, and this book provides a structured and complete way to do so.
