Who is the Whore of Babylon?

How often have we all heard ill-informed people claim that the “Whore of Babylon” mentioned in the book of Revelation is the Vatican / Holy Catholic Church? Let’s look in the Bible and find out for ourselves, rather than conjecture with our personal opinions.

A Great City

In order to find out who the Whore of Babylon is, Catholics should read the entire bible in context.  The Whore of Babylon is described in Revelation 17:18 as a “great city”:

The woman whom you saw represents the great city that has sovereignty over the kings of the earth.”

Now we all have to ask ourselves if Vatican City has dominion over any kings of the earth today.  There aren’t that many kings around anymore, for one thing, and even if you transpose the word “president” for “king”, it’s laughable to say that the Vatican has dominion over any president or ruler of a country today, with all of the legalized abortion, homosexual so-called “marriage,” pornography, contraception, divorce and remarriage, etc., that is going on in most countries today.  And in countries that do have kings, like Saudi Arabia, certainly the Vatican has no dominion over Muslim countries.

So which “great city” is John talking about anyway?  The seven hills that the whore sits on with the seven Kings gives us a clue.  It cannot be Vatican City, because the Vatican does not sit on one of the seven hills of Rome, which are Aventine Hill, Caelian Hill, Capitoline Hill, Esquiline Hill, Palatine Hill, Quirinal Hill, and Viminal Hill.  Vatican Hill sits across the Tiber River from ancient Rome, and was a crucifixion site (where Peter was crucified upside down). It was not made part of the city of Rome until the ninth Century, well after John wrote the book of Revelation.  And since we know that five of the seven kings have already fallen in John’s time, one is alive and one is yet to come, the city had to exist in John’s time, first Century AD.  This is all confirmed by Revelation 1:1, which says:

“The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave to him, to show his servants what must happen soon. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John

“Soon” would NOT be centuries later, for sure, but would indicate imminent events.

So this means that the Whore of Babylon is a great city that had to have existed in the first century.  Which city might that be?  Revelation 11:8 gives us the answer:

Their corpses will lie in the main street of the great city, which has the symbolic names “Sodom” and “Egypt,” where indeed their Lord was crucified.

Jerusalem, the city where Jesus was crucified, seems to be the great city, or the Whore of Babylon! But wait a minute – Isn’t Jerusalem the Holy City? How in the world could anyone say that Jerusalem is the Whore of Babylon?

For the record, Jerusalem also sits on seven hills, namely, Scopus, Nob, Mount of Corruption, Old Mount Zion, Ophel, Rock, and New Mount Zion. And at the time of John, Jerusalem did have a lot of power over many kings of the earth (because Jerusalem was the worldwide center for worship of God), as well as being an international center of commerce.

Jerusalem the Harlot

Let’s look elsewhere in the Bible, and in the words of our Protestant brothers and sisters, we will let Scripture interpret Scripture.  For example, in Isaiah 1, God is castigating Israel for its many sins, even referring to Israel as Sodom and Gomorrah in Isaiah 1:10:

Hear the word of the LORD, princes of Sodom!  Listen to the instruction of our God, people of Gomorrah!

In Revelation 11:8 previously mentioned above, we learned that the Whore, or great city, is allegorically called Sodom!  And in Isaiah 1:21 below, God calls Jerusalem a prostitute, which is another word for whore:

“How she has become a prostitute, the faithful city, so upright! Justice used to lodge within her, but now, murderers.”

Israel is also called a prostitute in Jeremiah 3:6:

The LORD said to me in the days of King Josiah: Do you see what rebellious Israel has done? She has gone up every high mountain, and under every green tree she has played the prostitute

Ezekiel 16:2 says that Jerusalem has abominations:

Son of man, make known to Jerusalem her abominations

And these abominations are described by God as being like a prostitute in Ezekiel 16:26-30:

You served as a prostitute with the Egyptians, your big-membered neighbors, and multiplied your prostitutions to provoke me. Therefore I stretched out my hand against you and reduced your allotment, and delivered you over to the whim of your enemies, the Philistines, who were revolted by your depraved conduct. You also served as a prostitute for the Assyrians, because you were not satisfied. Even after serving as a prostitute for them, you were still not satisfied. You increased your prostitutions again, now going to Chaldea, the land of traders; but despite this, you were still not satisfied. How wild your lust!—oracle of the Lord GOD—that you did all these works of a shameless prostitute.

God considered Jerusalem to be one with Him, as a man marries a bride.  But Jerusalem and its people always seemed to going after pagan wives, worshiping false idols like the golden calf, and generally not being true to the covenant God had established with them during the time of Moses. And now, in John’s time, the leaders of Jerusalem were teaming up with pagan Rome (the beast) to not only kill the apostles and prophets, but also to murder the Messiah Himself.

Jesus  Condemns Jerusalem

Jesus Himself condemns Jerusalem in Matthew 23:29-38:

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the memorials of the righteous, and you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have joined them in shedding the prophets’ blood.’ Thus you bear witness against yourselves that you are the children of those who murdered the prophets; now fill up what your ancestors measured out! You serpents, you brood of vipers, how can you flee from the judgment of Gehenna?

Therefore, behold, I send to you prophets and wise men and scribes; some of them you will kill and crucify, some of them you will scourge in your synagogues and pursue from town to town, so that there may come upon you all the righteous blood shed upon earth, from the righteous blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, the son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar. Amen, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.

“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how many times I yearned to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her young under her wings, but you were unwilling! Behold, your house will be abandoned, desolate.

Here we see Jesus foretelling the destruction of Jerusalem by pagan Rome in 70 AD.  Why?  Because they killed the prophets and stoned the ones sent to them.  This should sound familiar, because in Revelation 18:20, 24 we heard that

“Rejoice over her, heaven, you holy ones, apostles, and prophets. For God has judged your case against her.

“In her was found the blood of prophets and holy ones and all who have been slain on the earth.

Apostles and Prophets

So here we see in Revelation that the Whore of Babylon killed apostles and prophets.  Apostles were those that had actually been with Jesus, and prophets only existed up until the the death of John the Baptist, way before the Vatican was established. One trap that some fundamentalists fall into is their sincerely mistaken belief that the Catholic Church wasn’t started until Constantine came along in the 4th Century.  While that isn’t true (we have the writings from the early Church Fathers that confirm that the Catholic Church began with Peter’s commissioning), the following questions have to be asked:

“How can the Whore of Babylon be the Catholic Church, which was allegedly founded by Constantine centuries later, if the Whore had to be around in the first century when the last prophet was killed?”

and

“If the Catholic Church is the Whore of Babylon, exactly which apostles and prophets did the Catholic Church kill?

And who destroyed the Whore of Babylon?

Babylon, or pagan Rome, did, in 70 AD, with the destruction of Jerusalem.  Remember, Babylon (Rome) and its whore, (Jerusalem) teamed up to kill Christ. (In an ironic twist, everything that the High Priest Caiphas said would happen to Jerusalem if Christ lived (the destruction of the nation of Israel), did come to pass, precisely because they killed Christ!) Babylon is an apocalyptic code name for Rome, which symbolized sexual and immoral excess.  Revelation 17:16 says that the ten horns (symbolizing the ten rulers of pagan Rome) will destroy the whore by fire, which is exactly what the Romans did to Jerusalem in 70 AD.  Revelation 17:14 says that the Lamb will conquer them both.  The complete conquering of Rome by the Christians happened in the 4th Century of Catholicism, when Constantine became the first Christian emperor of Rome, and who stopped all of the religious persecutions of Christians with the Edict of Milan in 313 AD. And just as King David conquered pagan Jerusalem and turned it into God’s headquarters, just so, Jesus, David’s successor and the King of Kings, conquered pagan Rome and turned it into God’s headquarters, thus fulfilling the prophecy of Daniel 7:27.

Who is 666?

In numerology, each letter is assigned a value. In Greek, the language of the New Testament, the name Caesar Nero, the emperor alive at the time Revelation was written, adds up to 666.  Nero killed his own brother and mother, and was generally known as the most decadent of all the emperors of Rome. John was trying to give the Christians who were alive at the time hope, by telling them that Jesus would eventually triumph over wicked Jerusalem and pagan Rome. The stubborn Jews of that day, like the murderous Saul, were turning in Christians to the Roman authorities to be tortured and murdered. Thankfully, on his way to Damascus, Saul saw the light of Christ (“the people who walked in darkness have seen a great light,” Isaiah 9:2) and became the saintly Paul. But there was a price to be paid, as Nero not only killed Peter for preaching the truth, but also Paul, who died by being beheaded (he was a Roman citizen, and therefore escaped crucifixion).

Who is the Antichrist?

For the record, the word Antichrist appears nowhere in the book of Revelation! St. John does describe who the antichrist is in 1 John 2:22 – An antichrist is someone who denies that Jesus is the Messiah. For the record, no Pope has ever denied that Jesus is the Messiah. However, this reference does mean that today we do have many secular antichrists among us.

According to a new poll conducted by the Public Religion Research Institute,
51% of American Catholics believe abortion should be legal in all or
most cases, while 45% say it should be illegal in all or most cases

    • Steve Karper

it is legal in at least the first trimester.

time for the church that objects to birth control to butt out of the discussion, no one is forcing you to have an abortion but the last few days a significant number of planned parenthood offices have been firebombed

and lets undo the various lies – the long standing hyde amenment prohibits using federal grants for abortions

Ray just wondering. Where in the bible does it say to worship Mary. Or where does it talk about infant baptism? I believe from what you say that you are a reader of Gods word. You must have read where God says there is only one mediator between God and man and that is Jesus Christ. If you have found in the bible scriptures on worshipping Mary or infant baptism I would love to read them.

    • crystal

I don’t believe at all that the whore of Babylon is Jerusalem. The anti Christ isn’t the pope… There will arise a world leader… The pope is the false prophet…. He will join with the antichrist and push the one world order. Watch and see…..

    • Ray Sullivan

Nowhere does it say to worship Mary. Why do you ask?

    • Wardog00

Because many fundamentalists confuse veneration of Mary with adoration of God.
Crystal is using several of the fundamentalist arguments against the Catholic Church, top of the list being venerating Mary and infant baptism. They can’t seem to get their heads wrapped around the idea of godparents making promises on behalf of the infant that are later confirmed by the young adult around the age of 13.

  • Jim the Scott

It’s not either/or it’s both and. After all in the Book of Revelations the horns of the beast have more than one meaning according to the book itself. The the Whore of Babylon could conceivably be both pagan Rome and apostate Jerusalem.

  • Aliquantillus

A very biased exegesis, if it can be called exegesis at all. After having pointed out that Babylon cannot be the Vatican because the present-day Vatican is not the great city that has sovereignty over the kings of the earth, you jump to the conclusion that it must be first-century Jerusalem in a typical Catholic smear of the Jews. As if Jerusalem ever was a great city having sovereignty over the kings of the earth. But this ignorance doesn’t bother you at all. And on top of this nonsense, you deduce from the fact that the Book of Revelation was given to show “what must happen soon”, that it cannot deal with prophetic events in a far future. If this would be so, then what would you make of Jesus’ saying: “Behold I come quickly” (Apoc. 22:11)? Has the Second Coming in your opinion already happened, because “quickly” cannot be centuries away? I could go on and on and on in showing the inconsistencies here, which only confirm any non-Catholic in their prejudice that Catholics know nothing of the Bible and only use it to give their Church’s teachings an aureole of antiquity and scriptural sanctity.

    • Ray Sullivan

God called Jerusalem and Israel a prostitute over and over again in the Old Testament, not me. I just present the facts for logical people to read.

Jesus comes to the earth every day in the form of the Eucharist, which would be “soon.”

      Peace

    • Aliquantillus

The fact that Jerusalem at times is called a prostitute in other texts of the Bible doesn’t logically imply at all that the Great Babylon of the Apocalypse is Jerusalem. The Book of the Apocalypse should be interpreted in the first place from its own context. By throwing texts together from diverse other books and different contexts in order to get your Jerusalem interpretation you’re neglecting all genuine methodology. And to say that the text of Apoc. 22:12, which is clearly about the Second Coming, has anything to do with the Eucharist is simply ridiculous and distorting the obvious. It is about the public end-time coming of Jesus in judgment. This is abundantly clear by simply reading the entire chapter. Any biblical scholar will confirm this.

    • Ray Sullivan

Actually, the Bible is to be taken as one when doing exegesis. To rip the book of Revelation out of biblical context is not biblical in any way, shape, or fashion. John said the events would happen SOON, which is not 2000 years later.

    • Stephen

But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

    • Aliquantillus

I’m not ripping the Book of the Apocalypse out of its historical or biblical context at all. The point is that there can be a partial or initial fulfilment of a prophecy, which in a later context is more completely and definitively fulfilled. Think for instance of the Immanuel prophecy of Is. ch. VII, which was partially fulfilled in the time when it was given, but ultimately and in a deeper sense in the birth of King Messiah, Jesus Christ.

    • Cpq

You’re basing an assumption on the Catholic church on what one Catholic is saying. Not exactly the best decision. The Book of Revelation is the most misunderstood book in the Bible, it seems. John was exiled and wrote to Christians in code – they would understand. If Nero intercepted the letters, he would not understand. The Book of Revelation actually explains to the churches, to whom John was writing, about the Holy Mass. Before you argue with me, read the book The Lamb’s Supper by Scott Hahn.

    • Aliquantillus

Since I didn’t start arguing with you but you started arguing with me, perhaps I may also recommend some books to you, in particular the classic Catholic commentaries on the Apocalypse of Francisco de Ribera and Card. Robert Bellarmine.

    • crystal

How about you read the bible instead.

    • Aliquantillus

      Why ‘instead’?

    • crystal

Because God will show you his truth in his word… I have read so many books and I have heard so many opinions. But the best is when u sit down with the lord and ask him to show you the truth. He will start to reveal it to YOU…. You will get it first hand… from him…. Its his pleasure to reveal his word to his children.

    • Aliquantillus

I agree with you that the Holy Scripture is the undiluted Word of God. But I don’t agree that Babylon is Jerusalem. These two cities are always carefully distinguished. Babylon always stands for Gentile power, and this is also the case in Apocalypse ch. XVII, for she sits on a beast. Beasts, in propphetic imagery, always refer to Gentile empires, never to Israel. In Apoc. 17:18 it is clearly said that this woman Babylon is “that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth”. If this is a reference to a power known in St. John’s own days, it could only be Rome. And if this imagery has a fulfilment in the “Day of the Lord” — which is the time period of judgment the visions are said to be about (in Apoc. 1:10) — then this future fulfilment must be in line with this historic imagery.

    • crystal

I don’t think Jerusalem is the whore of Babylon either.

    • crystal

I didn’t say that being mean. I mean just read the bible… all the answers r in there. I read it everyday … thirty years now….. and every time I open the word up something new pops out. After you receive the holy Spirit God will teach you all things in his word . Its awesome.

Ray – I’m confused by this statement – “How can the Whore of Babylon be the Catholic Church, which was allegedly founded by Constantine centuries later,…” Are you saying the Catholic Church was founded by Constantine?

    • Ray Sullivan

No, it’s a hypothetical. They want it both ways – that Constantine founded the church in the 4th century, and the Catholic Church is the Whore of the first century. The question cannot be answered.

    • Cpq

Okay, Jesus founded the Catholic church and Constantine was a convert to Catholicism. Who is ‘They’

    • Ray Sullivan

The fundamentalists who claim that the whore is the Holy Catholic Church.

    • Cpq

I’ve never heard ‘they’ thought Constantine founded the church. Do they think he founded the Catholic church? or just a Christian church? Just curious, but either way it doesn’t make sense.

not so much jerusalem as materialism, sorry Scott hahn

    • Cpq

First, why are you referencing Scott Hahn. If you are – you should be able to back it up because I doubt you are half as learned as Mr. Hahn. I have listened to all the writings he has studied, he has incredible knowledge. Many protestants think the Bible was written for our time. In actuality, the Bible is a collection of writings (letters) placed together, by Catholics, to tell people who Jesus Christ was. It was written for the people of their time, with lessons for all time.

    • Scott Pauline

scott hahn is preterist, and so thinks that the whore is jerusalem, but i am saying, it is far deeper to see it as materialism. Scott hahn is apocalypse light

    • crystal

steve I am not a fan of the Catholic church. If you study the roots of it you will see how wicked it is… one of my arguments has been infant baptism…. Your video just proves my point about it… Jesus says repent and be baptized in my name. how can an infant repent??? he cant… Even Hitler was baptized as a child. you mean to tell me he went through the pearly gates. I don’t think so. The Catholic church did horrible things in the name of god. One of them was to burn William Tyndale at the stake.. He translated the bible into English. The Catholic church didn’t want anyone reading the bible on their own. They were horrible. Concerning Israel. There is a special place in Gods heart for Israel… not because they were his chosen people but because of the covenant he made with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. God gave them that land and their offspring. The Jew has paid a high price for the rejection of the messiah. Unfortunately they will pay even more. I believe before Jesus returns to save them…( The reason why he does return) 2/3 of the jew will perish. Only a remnant will be saved. The land is precious to God. The Lord tells us to pray for her. Let God be the judge of her. I don’t believe The whore of Babylon is Israel. After Jesus died on the cross the message of MERCY… was set in action for her….

    • Ray Sullivan

Tyndale’s translation was heretical, and certainly not accurate.

    • crystal

Oh I see that’s why they burnt him at the stake… with many others. Tyndale was far from a Heretic. He exposed the Lies that were coming from the church. For someone who reads the bible how could you not see ?????? How could you not see how the Catholic church has been made up of man made laws? How????

    • crystal

Sorry the bible wasn’t written by Catholics. As a matter of Fact The Catholic church killed Tyndale. They burnt him at the stake for tryng to publish the bible in English. They went and gathered all the copies and burnt them also.

    • Ray Sullivan

No, his translation was NOT accurate. He was a heretic, and in those days, heretics were not treated well. The Catholic Church has always read the scriptures, at every Mass, and enshrined the scriptures in artwork. Without the monks and Pope Damasus I, you wouldn’t even have the bible.

    • crystal

Ray have u studied the making of the Catholic Church? In the day of Constantine ??? When Paganism and Christianity merged?.

    • crystal

William Tyndale’s Bible was the first English language Bible to appear in print. During the 1500s, the very idea of an English language Bible was shocking and subversive. This is because, for centuries, the English Church had been governed from Rome, and church services were by law conducted in Latin. Most people in Europe were unable to speak Latin, and so could not understand the Bible directly. The Church therefore acted as the mediator between God and the people, with Priests interpreting the bible on behalf of their congregations.

By Tyndale’s day, vernacular Bibles (those written in local languages) were available in parts of Europe, where they added fuel to the fight for the Reformation, a political crisis that resulted in the splitting of Christianity into Catholic and Protestant Churches. But in England it was still strictly forbidden to translate the Bible into English. Tyndale believed that ordinary people should be able to read (or listen to) the Bible in a language they could understand, but his Bible was highly illegal. The book was banned and Tyndale was eventually executed. An astonishing number of Tyndale’s translated phrases are still in use today, including:

    • Wardog00

The Bible was not written by Catholics, but the Catholic Church chose which books were to be included in the Bible as divinely inspired, and which ones were not.
If the Catholic Church did not do this, please explain who did.

    • PalaceGuard

And, as with a good deal of Biblical prophecy, it contains references to events past, present, and future that parallel and “rhyme with” (as is usually attributed to Twain) each other.

Question for Phil Dzialo – Phil – We have the Scriptures known as the Dead Sea Scrolls. They have been dated to before the time of Christ. With all of the prophecies in them that Christ fulfilled (i.e., Isaiah 53, Psalm 22, Isaiah 7:14, etc., etc., ad infinitum, why don’t you believe in Christ? Only God could have predicted all that would happen to himself hundreds of years later.
